10Physical barriers and sealants to prevent pest entry
Escutcheon Plate
Two-piece decorative and functional plates that fit around plumbing pipes where they penetrate walls or floors. Creates a tight seal preventing pest entry through gaps around pipes.
Door Sweep
Weather-stripping device installed on the bottom of doors to seal the gap between door and threshold, preventing pest entry, drafts, and moisture.
Silicone Sealant
100% silicone caulk that provides flexible, waterproof, long-lasting seal for cracks and gaps. More durable and water-resistant than acrylic latex caulk but not paintable.
Acrylic Latex Caulk
Water-based sealant that is paintable and easy to clean up. Siliconized acrylic latex blends flexibility of silicone with paintability of acrylic. Good for interior pest-proofing where paint-matching is needed.
Spackle / Joint Compound
Paste-like material for filling larger holes and gaps in walls, ceilings, and woodwork. Dries hard and can be sanded and painted. Used with spackling knife for application. Essential for pest exclusion work on drywall and plaster.
Backer Rod
Flexible foam rope used to fill deep or wide gaps before caulking. Provides backing for sealant, reducing amount of caulk needed and improving seal performance.
Copper Mesh
Tightly woven copper or stainless steel mesh used to fill holes and gaps around pipes, in walls, and other openings. Rodents cannot chew through copper or stainless steel mesh.
Steel Wool (Soapless)
PROFESSIONAL NOTE: Copper mesh is strongly preferred over steel wool for all rodent exclusion work because steel wool rusts and fails, especially in moisture-prone areas. Steel wool may be used for temporary exclusion in dry interior locations only. Must be soapless to avoid deterioration.
Rodent Barrier Cloth (Hardware Cloth)
Heavy-duty galvanized or stainless steel mesh screen that rodents cannot chew through. Used to screen vents, cover large openings, and create barriers under buildings.
Bed Bug Mattress and Box Spring Encasement
Zippered fabric cover that completely encloses mattress or box spring, trapping any bed bugs inside where they eventually die of starvation (can take 12-18 months). Smooth, bite-proof exterior prevents bed bugs from hiding in tufts and seams. Essential component of bed bug IPM programs. High-quality encasements have bed-bug-proof zippers with small teeth and locking mechanism to prevent escape.
