Adults 1/8 to 1/4 inch long, dark delicate flies with long legs and antennae. Slender larvae have shiny black head and white thread-like body. Attracted to light and run rapidly over surfaces. Larvae feed on fungi, decaying organic matter, and plant root hairs in overwatered potted plants. Common in interiorscapes and greenhouses.
