Application Method

Install and maintain insect light traps (ILTs) in food processing facilities, restaurants, warehouses, and other commercial buildings to monitor and control flying insects. ILTs use ultraviolet light to attract insects to either sticky glue boards (safer for food areas) or electric grids (more effective but can scatter insect fragments). Install per placement guidelines: 15-20 feet apart, 4-6 feet above floor, away from competing light sources, not visible from exterior, and never over food preparation or exposed food areas. Position to draw insects away from sensitive areas toward trap. During each service visit, replace glue boards or clean catch trays, count and identify insects caught, clean unit, check bulb operation, and replace UV bulbs annually (lose effectiveness even when still producing visible light). Document catches to monitor program effectiveness.

Timing

Install during facility setup or as soon as fly issues identified. Service during regular pest control visits.

Frequency

Service monthly minimum for commercial food facilities. Replace glue boards monthly or more frequently in high-catch areas. Replace UV bulbs annually. Clean units during each service.

Preparation Required

Survey facility to determine optimal trap placement and number needed. Verify electrical outlets available at placement locations. Select appropriate trap style for area (glue board vs electric grid). Have replacement glue boards and bulbs in stock.

Follow-up Required

Count and identify catches by species - high numbers indicate sanitation or exclusion issues. Record data and track trends. Use catch patterns to identify source areas. Adjust trap placement if needed. Provide catch reports to customer for audit compliance. Combine with sanitation and exclusion for comprehensive fly management.

Safety Precautions

  • Install away from food and food prep areas - not directly overhead
  • Use glue board style units in food handling areas (not electric grid)
  • Ensure units are UL-listed and properly grounded
  • Turn off power before servicing
  • Do not position where they attract insects from outdoors
  • Dispose of used glue boards in sealed plastic bags
