Application Method

Apply liquid insecticide to soil and foundation surfaces around entire building perimeter to create protective barrier. Spray or drench soil in band 6-12 inches out from foundation and treat foundation wall 1-3 feet up from ground. Use sufficient volume to penetrate soil and thatch layer (typically 2-10 gallons per 1000 sq ft depending on product and soil type). Clear mulch and vegetation back from foundation before treatment for better penetration. For termite prevention, may need to trench and treat per label directions for specific products. Use non-repellent products (fipronil, imidacloprid) for ants and termites to allow transfer to colony. Pyrethroid products (bifenthrin, cypermethrin) provide good general pest barrier.

Timing

Apply in early spring before pest activity begins as preventive measure. Can be applied any time pests are observed entering structure. Best results when soil is moist but not saturated.

Frequency

Reapply every 60-90 days during pest season. Some products labeled for quarterly or semi-annual application. Termite prevention products may provide multi-year protection.

Preparation Required

Clear mulch, vegetation, and debris 6-12 inches from foundation. Identify and protect water sources. Locate underground utilities before trenching if required. Ensure adequate product volume for job. Close windows and doors.

Follow-up Required

Replace mulch after treatment dries (4-24 hours depending on product). Maintain vegetation-free border around foundation. Monitor for pest activity. Document treatment for warranty purposes if termite application. Schedule re-treatment based on product label.

Safety Precautions

  • Requires licensed pest management professional
  • Do not apply to water-saturated soil
  • Do not apply immediately before heavy rain expected
  • Avoid contamination of wells, cisterns, or other water sources
  • Keep people and pets away from treatment area until dry
  • Do not allow runoff to enter storm drains or waterways
  • Follow product label directions for termite vs general pest applications
