Application Method

Install dehumidifiers, fans, and ventilation equipment to reduce moisture levels in crawl spaces, basements, and other damp areas attracting wood-destroying organisms and moisture pests. Assess moisture levels using moisture meters and hygrometers. Target crawl space relative humidity below 60%. Recommend solutions based on conditions: install dehumidifier sized for space (calculate pints/day capacity needed), improve ventilation with additional vents or powered ventilation, seal crawl space and condition with HVAC (encapsulation approach), install vapor barrier over soil, repair foundation drainage, and redirect downspouts. Reducing moisture eliminates conducive conditions for wood decay, termites, carpenter ants, and moisture-dependent beetles. May require collaboration with HVAC contractor or moisture remediation specialist.

Timing

Assess when wood-destroying organisms detected or moisture damage observed. Implement during dry season for best results.

Frequency

One-time installation of equipment. Monitor moisture levels quarterly to verify effectiveness. Maintain dehumidifiers according to manufacturer specifications.

Preparation Required

Measure moisture levels throughout space with moisture meter and hygrometer. Calculate space volume to size dehumidifier. Identify moisture sources (groundwater, poor drainage, condensation). Prepare detailed recommendation report.

Follow-up Required

Monitor moisture levels to verify equipment functioning and achieving target humidity. Provide customer with maintenance requirements. Document pre and post moisture levels. Adjust termite treatment recommendations based on moisture reduction achieved.

Safety Precautions

  • Ensure electrical installations meet code requirements
  • Size equipment appropriately for space
  • Maintain dehumidifier drain systems
  • Monitor equipment function regularly
