Application Method

Apply insecticidal dust (boric acid, diatomaceous earth, silica gel, delta dust, or other formulations) into wall voids, attics, crawl spaces, and other void spaces using hand duster, bulb duster, or electric duster. Apply LIGHT dusting only - visible but not heavy accumulation. Heavy dust applications are less effective as insects avoid them. Insert duster tip into voids through small holes (drill if necessary), then apply while slowly withdrawing tip to distribute dust throughout void. Target areas include: wall voids through electrical outlets, attic floor along joists, crawl space perimeter, inside hollow doors, behind wall-mounted fixtures, and under insulation. Dusts provide long-lasting control (years) if kept dry and provide excellent control in areas where sprays cannot reach.

Timing

Apply during initial service or as part of comprehensive treatment program. Best applied during renovations when wall cavities are accessible. Can treat existing structures through access points.

Frequency

One-time application provides long-term control if dust remains dry and undisturbed. Inspect annually and reapply only if dust has been removed or gotten wet.

Preparation Required

Identify void spaces and access points. Drill small access holes if needed. Ensure proper PPE is available. Select appropriate dust formulation for target pest and location. Plan dust application pattern to ensure complete coverage.

Follow-up Required

Seal access holes used for application with appropriate materials. Label treated areas with date and product used. Clean up any visible dust from accessible surfaces. Monitor for pest activity. Dust remains effective indefinitely if kept dry.

Safety Precautions

  • Requires licensed pest management professional for most formulations
  • Wear dust mask or respirator and eye protection during application
  • Avoid creating airborne dust in occupied spaces
  • Do not apply to areas where dust could contact food
  • Do not over-apply - light dusting is most effective
  • Label treatment areas for future reference
  • Ensure attic ventilation is not blocked by dust
