Application Method

Modify environmental conditions to make habitat unsuitable for moisture-loving pests. Recommendations include: reduce mulch depth to 2-3 inches maximum, pull mulch back 6-12 inches from foundation creating bare zone, remove leaf litter and organic debris from foundation area, improve drainage with grading and French drains, repair downspouts to direct water away from foundation, reduce irrigation near foundation, increase ventilation in crawl spaces and basements, repair leaking hoses and irrigation heads, remove rotting wood and landscaping debris, thin dense ground covers near foundation, and reduce shaded areas adjacent to building. Moisture pests require high humidity - eliminating moisture sources and creating dry zone around foundation prevents infestation without pesticides.

Timing

Assess during initial inspection when moisture pests detected. Implement recommendations immediately for best results.

Frequency

One-time habitat modification with ongoing maintenance. Annual assessment to verify modifications maintained and new issues have not developed.

Preparation Required

Complete inspection identifying all moisture sources and conducive conditions. Document with photos. Prepare prioritized recommendation list. Explain to customer how moisture attracts pests.

Follow-up Required

Follow up to verify customer implemented recommendations. Measure pest population reductions. Continue monitoring. Explain that habitat modification provides long-term solution reducing need for pesticides. Adjust treatment program as moisture issues corrected.

Safety Precautions

  • Use appropriate tools safely
  • Dispose of organic debris properly
  • Do not create erosion issues when improving drainage
  • Maintain plant health when reducing irrigation
