Application Method
Apply borate solution or foam to wood during construction for long-term protection against wood-destroying organisms. Spray, brush, or inject borate (disodium octaborate tetrahydrate - DOT or Tim-bor) into wood framing, sill plates, rim joists, and other structural members before installation of insulation and drywall. Borates penetrate wood and provide residual protection by making wood unpalatable and toxic to wood-destroying organisms. Most effective on new exposed wood before enclosure. Can also be applied to existing structures via foam injection into wall voids or during renovation when framing exposed. Provides permanent protection in interior protected locations. Best used as preventative measure in high termite pressure areas.
Timing
Apply during new construction after framing erected but before insulation and drywall. Best applied to dry wood for maximum penetration.
Frequency
One-time application provides permanent protection in protected interior locations. No reapplication needed unless wood gets wet and borates leach out.
Preparation Required
Coordinate with builder for access during construction. Calculate wood surface area to determine product needs. Mix borate to proper concentration. Have spray equipment ready.
Follow-up Required
Document all treated areas. Provide builder/customer with treatment certification. Explain borate protection limited to treated wood in interior locations. Recommend soil treatment or baiting system for comprehensive termite protection.
Safety Precautions
- Requires licensed pest management professional
- Wear appropriate PPE during mixing and application
- Only effective in protected interior locations - not for exterior wood
- Borates can leach from wood if exposed to water
- Follow label rates for dilution
