Application Method
Apply insecticide to mulch beds around foundation and landscape to control moisture-loving pests harboring in organic mulch. Pull mulch back from foundation before treatment, treat foundation and soil, then rake mulch back leaving 6-inch gap from foundation. Apply liquid insecticide or granules to top surface of mulch and allow to penetrate. For liquid applications, apply sufficient volume to penetrate mulch layer (1-2 gallons per 1000 sq ft). Granular products activated by rainfall or irrigation. Target treatment to areas with visible pest activity. Non-repellent products (fipronil, imidacloprid) transferred to colonies. Pyrethroids provide quick knockdown and barrier.
Timing
Apply in spring before peak pest season. Reapply as needed throughout season based on pest pressure.
Frequency
Every 60-90 days during pest season. More frequent applications needed after heavy rainfall or fresh mulch installation.
Preparation Required
Identify mulch beds with pest activity. Rake mulch back from foundation. Clear debris from beds. Calculate square footage for proper rates.
Follow-up Required
Rake mulch back but maintain 6-inch gap from foundation. Educate customer on proper mulch depth (2-3 inches maximum) to reduce pest harborage. Monitor for continued activity. Recommend reducing mulch depth if excessive.
Safety Precautions
- Requires licensed pest management professional
- Keep people and pets off treated areas until dry
- Do not apply to water-saturated mulch
- Avoid contamination of nearby plantings
- Maintain 6-inch mulch-free zone at foundation
