Bed Bug Laundry Protocol
Target Pests (3)
Application Method
Instruct customer to launder all bedding, linens, clothing, and fabric items from infested room in hot water (120°F minimum) followed by high heat dryer for 30-60 minutes. Heat kills all life stages of bed bugs including eggs. Items that cannot be washed should be dried on high heat for 30-60 minutes. Items that cannot tolerate heat can be sealed in plastic bags for 4-6 months until bed bugs die from starvation, or placed in freezer at 0°F for 4 days minimum. After laundering, store clean items in sealed plastic bags or containers until treatment complete to prevent reinfestation. Essential preparation step before bed bug treatment to reduce population and prevent spread to other areas during treatment.
Timing
Complete before initial bed bug treatment. Launder items on same day as treatment if possible.
Frequency
One-time intensive laundering before treatment. Continue regular laundering of bedding weekly during treatment period.
Preparation Required
Provide customer with detailed laundry instructions. Supply plastic bags for transporting items. Create list of all items requiring laundering. Identify items needing alternative treatment (heat-sensitive, dry-clean only).
Follow-up Required
Verify customer completed laundering before treatment. Check that clean items stored in sealed bags. Provide instructions for gradual reintroduction of items after treatment confirmed successful.
Safety Precautions
- Transport items to laundry in sealed plastic bags
- Place items directly from bag into washer - do not spread bed bugs in laundry area
- Wash bags or discard after use
- Dry items thoroughly - heat is key for killing bed bugs
- Store clean items in new sealed bags until treatment complete
