Application Method

Apply EPA-registered products containing naturally-derived or reduced-risk active ingredients as alternative to conventional synthetic pesticides. Products include: pyrethrins (from chrysanthemum flowers) for rapid knockdown, neem oil for soft-bodied insects and insect growth regulation, insecticidal soaps for soft-bodied pests, botanical oils (rosemary, peppermint, clove) for repellency and contact kill, spinosad (bacterial fermentation product) for caterpillars and thrips, diatomaceous earth for crawling insects, and boric acid for cockroaches and ants. Apply per product labels using appropriate equipment. Organic products generally have shorter residual requiring more frequent applications. Best used as component of comprehensive IPM program emphasizing prevention.

Timing

Apply when pest activity detected. Many botanical products work best with direct contact requiring precise timing.

Frequency

More frequent than synthetic products due to shorter residual. Typically weekly to bi-weekly depending on pest pressure and product.

Preparation Required

Select appropriate product for target pest. Discuss limitations and expectations with customer. Have proper application equipment. Calculate costs accounting for more frequent service.

Follow-up Required

Monitor pest populations closely. Reapply more frequently than synthetic products. Document all applications. Educate customer on importance of prevention and sanitation. Be prepared to recommend conventional products if organic approach insufficient.

Safety Precautions

  • Requires licensed pest management professional
  • Natural does not mean non-toxic - follow all label precautions
  • Some products can irritate skin, eyes, respiratory system
  • Pyrethrins highly toxic to fish - avoid water contamination
  • Shorter residual requires more frequent applications
  • Set realistic customer expectations
