Application Method

Apply larvicide to standing water where mosquito larvae are present or likely to develop. Products include: Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) granules, briquettes, or dunks for organic matter-rich water (catch basins, ponds, tree holes); methoprene or s-methoprene insect growth regulators for clean water (containers, fountains); spinosad for general use. BTI is biological control targeting only mosquito/fly larvae - safe for fish, wildlife, pets. IGR products prevent larvae from developing into biting adults. Apply granules or briquettes directly to water per label rates. BTI dunks float and release larvicide over 30 days. Treat catch basins, ornamental ponds, bird baths, clogged gutters, tree holes, tire ruts, plant saucers, and other water-holding containers that cannot be drained.

Timing

Apply in early spring before mosquito season begins. Reapply throughout season based on product label.

Frequency

BTI products: every 7-30 days depending on formulation. IGR products: every 30-60 days. Reapply after heavy rain or water turnover.

Preparation Required

Survey property for all standing water sources. Identify which can be drained and which require treatment. Count water features to calculate product needs. Have appropriate formulation for each water type.

Follow-up Required

Monitor treated water for mosquito larvae using dipper. Educate customer to eliminate unnecessary standing water. Reapply per label schedule. Document all treated water sources. Adjust program based on mosquito breeding activity.

Safety Precautions

  • Safe for use around fish, wildlife, and pets when used per label
  • Do not contaminate drinking water sources
  • Wear gloves during application
  • Follow label rates - over-application wasteful, under-application ineffective
  • Select formulation appropriate for water type
